Research Period June 2010 ~ May 2020 (10 years)
Supporting Organization Provincial Government of Gyeongsangbuk-do
Chief of Research Jeong, Woorak (Prof. of Dept. of Korean Language and Literature in Kyungpook National University)
Summary of Research The purpose of this project is to create brochures and video materials to introduce major Jongga families in Gyeongsangbuk-do (Gyeongbuk). The Institute already conducted preliminary research to track Jongga families around the country. According to the research, Gyeongbuk has more than 40% of all Jongga in Korea, which is the largest number of the country. The number of the traditional houses of Jongga which are designated as cultural assets is around 120. Recently, Jongga culture in regions is in crisis of extinction and destruction because of a decrease in rural population and aging of Jongson (the eldest living son of the main lineage) and Jongbu (the wife of Jongson) through industrialization. Therefore, Youngnam Culture Institute, the representative research institute in Youngnam region, started this project with the support of Provincial Government of Gyeongsangbuk-do to preserve and promote Jongga culture in Gyeongbuk. As of June 2016, 40 books on introduction of major Jongga in Gyeongbuk have been published. Besides this, the materials on the history, ancestral ritual ceremony, and the people of Jongga were published in CD (compact disc) form. Youngnam Culture Institute will continue to publish the materials introducing major Jongga families in Gyeongbuk in both book and CD forms. The institute is also currently offering a course on “Jongga Culture” for citizen, with The Society of Youngnam Confucianism Studies which is a part of Youngnam Culture Institute.
